Spyware Prevention with Spywareblaster

To kick-off the PC security category, I'm going to talk about a freeware gem called Spywareblaster. It is one of the first programs that I install on all my PCs. Spywareblaster helps prevent spyware from getting installed on your PC and is a set it and forget it program which means it doesn't need to be running in the background to do it's job. Here is a screenshot of what the main window looks like before you activate all the protection:
During installation you will have the option of setting up automatic updates which costs $9.00 and needs to be purchased or to update manually which is free and simple (the update icon is visible in my screenshot).
Once you have the program installed, if you will want to enable all protection. This is done easily by clicking the Enable All Protection link at the bottom of the Protection Status window. After you click the link you will see a progress bar and the links at the top of the window will show that all protection is enabled. It's quite simple and your PC will then be protected from many sneaky spyware installs and tracking cookies.
The settings on the left side of the window will enable you to take a System Snapshot. There is also a Tools menu that I recommend you do not make any changes to unless you know what you are doing and create a System Snapshot or System Restore Point first.

I run the program about once a month and click the Check for Updates button in the Updates menu. If there are any new definitions available you will able to download them from within the program and you will notice that you have some disabled protection that you can enable easily by clicking Enable All Protection link again. If there happens to be an update to the program you will be alerted when you check for updates that a new version is available, just click on the link and you will be taken to the Spywareblaster page where you can download the new version.
